My name is Gennifer Giusiana and I have an addiction. It is not the normal girly things such as MAC Makeup, bags or, shoes although I do love my Steve Maddens; I am addicted to being on everyone’s profile. I want to check my MySpace and Facebook to see if I have any comments or wall posts. It may sound ridiculous but I am addicted. I want to be able to see what my friend from ages ago is up to. I want to see the latest news from those around me. I want to use this to know that I have friends and let everyone see what I am up to now. When I was first introduced to MySpace it was while I was still in High school. I was only a sophomore when I decide to finally make an account. At first I did not understand how it was supposed to work. I had to have my friend walk me through each step of how to send a comment, post photos, and create new layouts. MySpace became something that I could customize and make my very own. I still remember one of my backgrounds was pink with white polka-dots! I was able to catch up with my friends and look at their pictures. As sad as it is to admit, I was also able to catch up on the latest gossip just by reading comments back and forth. (You have done the same, don’t lie) I was in high school and this to me was the perfect way to keep in touch with friends. When I started college my best friend introduced me to Facebook. After the four or so years with MySpace I wasn’t sure if I would be able to make the switch. Instead of comments it had The Wall. When I posted pictures I was able to put them into their own photo albums to keep it more organized. My latest discovery has been the Bumper Sticker application! If you have a Facebook, you will want this. It allows you to send funny pictures, or funny sayings, to any of your friends and have it posted for all to see. We all grow up in a world where the internet is not complicated, new sites are being created every day and only the best ones will survive. We will always find a way to post pictures of ourselves online so that everyone can see what our lives are like. For some, it will be the picture of them looking away from the camera, because even though they took a thousand shots of themselves they want everyone to think they are shy. For others, the picture will be the shot of them with their plastic red and blue cups; yeah we know what is in there. We are all conceited and want our lives posted for the world to know. These two main websites allow others to view the lives we want them to see. Although many of the friends I have on MySpace or Facebook I do not regularly comments or leave a wall post for, it is still a great way to see what they are doing without having to ask them. I know it sounds impersonal and pretty sad but that is what many people in high school and college are doing now. We get so caught up in school, work, and our families that there is no time for a quick phone call, so instead, we Facebook.
This, of course, does not help my addiction. I have weaned myself of off MySpace, but rely too heavily on Facebook. Eventually there will be another online social tool that I will get hooked on but until then; My name is Gennifer Giusiana and I have an addiction. |
